The automotive sector sets a record due to the industrial park in Guanajuato
8/10/2024Automotive production in Mexico reached a historic record this August, largely due to the sector's activity in the industrial park in Guanajuato.
As the state consolidates its position as a leader in automotive assembly in the country, Mexico reaches unprecedented figures for this industry: 2,651,060 vehicles manufactured from January to August 2024, according to reports from El Economista with figures from Inegi.
This total, corresponding to the first eight months of the year, surpasses by more than 7,000 units the country's assembly record, which was set in 2019. From January to July, Guanajuato contributed 529,726 vehicles to the national total, according to the news portal Cluster Industrial.
The outlet forecasts an increase in manufacturing in the state to 916,000 units by the end of the year, which would mark a historic milestone for Mexican automotive manufacturing and make the state a production hub with more than 22% of national manufacturing.
In its projections, the outlet indicates that Guanajuato is using about 84% of its installed production capacity, a factor that allows for a projected increase in assembly by 2025, reaching more than 960,000 vehicles.
What automotive plants are located in the industrial park in Guanajuato?
The automakers operating in the Bajio states are 4:
- General Motors: Located in Silao and operating at 93% capacity, Clúster Industrial reports that from January to July, it produced 219,259 units.
- Mazda: Operating in Salamanca at 83% of installed capacity, production from January to July 2024 reached 121,047 vehicles.
- Honda: With its plant in Celaya running at full capacity, it produced 117,067 vehicles between January and July.
- Toyota: At 62% production capacity in Apaseo el Grande, Toyota manufactured 72,353 cars between January and July.
Logistics and supplier networks boost production
The Bajio state not only has automakers that contribute to a significant volume of automotive production in Mexico, but it also has railroad transportation networks that allow for the transportation of assembly inputs and Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers that consolidate activities.
These factors promote the establishment of the industry and facilitate the attraction of new companies linked to the sector. As such, component manufacturers established in the state can be suppliers to automakers in other states, such as Aguascalientes, where Nissan operates, or Puebla, where Volkswagen assembles different models with engines made in Silao.
The arrival of new automotive companies in Mexico, such as Stellantis (which includes Chrysler and Fiat) to assemble electric cars in the State of Mexico or Volvo's announcement about the production of heavy vehicles at a plant in Nuevo Leon, expands the range of opportunities for automotive suppliers established in Guanajuato and their reach.
Amid the innovations and evolution triggered by electrification as a trend for the global automotive industry, manufacturing in Mexico is an attractive factor for establishing new companies, and Guanajuato’s industrial park offers an opportunity for the sector.
